Ultimately no matter which method you choose, what matters most is daily practice and your commitment to it. You should try to learn as many as you can and as much about them as you can. I believe radicals are totally essential.
Some prefer stories or mnemonics (like the Heisig method) while others prefer rote memorization and so on. So some of it is trial and error to see what fits. Learning Hanzi is a very personal thing, a technique may work well for one person but not so well for another.
